Join us at Pandemonium for a special event where we’ll teach (and play!) Twilight Imperium (4th Edition). You’re especially welcome if you’ve never played this game before (and don’t mind spending the day with us!).
Because it’s a notoriously long game (6-8 hours), we’ll be starting early to make sure there’s time to play it. We will likely take a break mid-way through.
What is this game about?
“As the galaxy churns inexorably toward its violent future, the Great Civilizations have begun to feed the flames that fuel their war machines. An epoch of great struggle threatens to engulf the galaxy once more as each faction races toward the desiccated seat of an ancient empire on Mecatol Rex to become the indisputable ruler of the stars. It is a time of steadfast alliances and bloody betrayals. Of words and of war. Of deep-seated honor and hard-won glory. It is the dawn of a new era.” – From the Publisher
At its heart, Twilight Imperium is a game about completing specific, in-game objectives to score the most points at the table. Because these objectives are revealed randomly, one-at-a-time each round, you’ll need to balance carefully your economic, military, and political development to be able to pivot and adjust quickly to the changing landscape of the galaxy. It’s a game that thrives on how each player mitigates randomness through the choices they make, and as such, it’s a highly dramatic, engrossing, and rich board game experience.
Will this game be for me?
If you enjoy grand strategy — choosing a far-off objective and reaching for it, turn-by-turn — you’ll like this game. If you like the idea of passing laws to get rid of rules you don’t like — you have that option here. If you enjoy discovering new information and game-shaking, one-time abilities, this experience will be full of those stories.
If you don’t like the idea of your plans being unraveled by a bad dice roll, or you like games that succeed by your performance on the mechanisms alone, this may not be the game for you. Also, it is long — notoriously long — and there will only be one winner in a contest that is inherently based on conflict. But as stated, all of these elements come together in a memorable, dramatic tale where even if you don’t win, you can be part of the greater story proceeding from the people around you.
So if that sounds like something you’d want to try, do sign up for the event! We will cap the table at 6 players, but we need a quorum of three to run (so do sign up, if you’re able to attend; we will refund you if we have to cancel). And if you want to try it out, but this time doesn’t work for you, please fill out the survey (at this link); TI4 requires extra planning, but we think it’s worth it to give folks a chance to try this game.
And as always, if this isn’t your cup of tea, please stay tuned to our Events Calendar for future events on Sunday, our typical night for games.
