Learn to Play Thunder Road: Vendetta and Top Gun, Games About Vehicular Mayhem (with or without Volleyball)

Join us at Pandemonium for a special, 3-hour, demoed session to learn and play two games involving vehicular mayhem: Thunder Road: Vendetta, and Top Gun Strategy GameYou’re especially welcome if you’ve never before played hobby board games (and are curious about where to start).

To kick off the new year, we’re demoing two games about the need for speed. Both games are a little ridiculous in their premises (inspired by ‘80s action films, no less), but both are charming in their own way, if you go in with an open mind. If that sounds like fun, then read on!

Thunder Road: Vendetta (2-5 players) takes its inspiration from the road combat in Mad Max. Your goal is twofold: 1) make sure one of your three cars makes it to the finish line first, and 2) make sure the other players don’t. It’s a tactical game of deciding how best to optimize your actions while other players are trying to run you into road obstacles or send their attack helicopters to blow you up. Even though there is player elimination, the game is fast enough to get you back in the action for another round.

Top Gun Strategy Game (2-4 players) assumes you know the film – referenced as generically as possible – and asks you to imagine a world where volleyball matches dictate military training exercises in jet planes. Practically, it’s a head-to-head team game made up of two smaller games: volleyball and airplane dogfighting. In the first game, you and your teammate play a pseudo-Stratego volleyball match, and the victorious team determines priority in the dogfight thereafter (where victory points are scored). This game hinges in a weird space between silly and serious, but if you approach it looking to have ridiculous fun, it could be a good time.

So if you ever wanted to learn this game or just want to spend time with others who want to play it, come on out! And if you’d rather leave your 80s movies for the screen and wait for our next demoed event, stay tuned to our Events Calendar for future announcements.
