From now until the end of the year, come to Pandemonium for the next several weekends to learn (and play) a selection of winter-holiday-themed tabletop roleplaying games! After the horror games of October, we wanted to make the season bright by exploring some slightly sillier (but still Indie!) ttRPG titles..

How this will work:

The schedule of ttRPGs is below:

  • Saturday, 12/06: The Doom That Came to Christmas Town (DCC)

  • Saturday, 12/20: Warmer in the Winter (PbtA)

Note that, in order to give us time to digest the game, each session will run from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. (in the back event room – past the ttRPG books). Note that games won’t necessarily take 4 hours, but for these, we want to save some extra time at the end to decompress, reflect, explore the games – and finish on time!

The second game: Warmer in the Winter

From the publisher:

Warmer in the Winter is a tabletop roleplaying game about finding love in a cozy winter world. It is inspired by Hallmark and Lifetime style holiday romances such as The Spirit of Christmas, Let It Snow, and A Royal Christmas but the system works equally well for romantic dramedies in the vein of Gilmore Girls and Good Witch.

“Here you will follow the denizens of a nosy small town, a tight knit group of urban friends, outsiders, and more as they mature, fall in love, strengthen their bonds with each other, and learn the meaning of the season. Enjoy the smell of espresso in the corner coffee shop, revel in the warmth of the fire at the inn down the lane, defend the community park against the plans to pave it over, and stumble over your words in front of the stranger with the sparkling eyes.”

ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

As the publisher says, Warmer in the Winter has a simple premise: create a Hallmark-style, cozy winter romance. Note that even though the primary drama of these stories tends to be romance (albeit at the PG level), we do not have to explore romance as a major theme of the game. We’re playing in public, after all, and player safety and comfort is always at the forefront.

Nevertheless, we’ll still hope to craft a tale evocative of the theme, whether that means exploring the salvation of a small-town business from the evils of big-corporations, discovering impossible relation coincidences and dynamics, or even just reflecting on the life-giving magic of the holiday season.

Or something like that.

Because, in the end, the fun thing about a PbtA system is that we won’t know what kind of story we’re telling — serious or a send-up — until we all sit down to play.

So bring your tired, hackneyed tropes, cider-scented sensibilities, and an open mind to Warmer in the Winter. Note that we may be modifying/adding onto the base rules slightly to better foster a collaborative experience. Ultimately, we shall see!
