Join us at Pandemonium for our 3-hour, bi-weekly session to learn and play games! You’re especially welcome if you’ve never before played hobby board games (and are curious about where to start).
Today, we’ll be exploring two games that see how well you can manage (and feed) different aquatic creatures: Finspan and Evolution: Oceans. Both games (coincidentally) are variations on their base systems: Wingspan and Evolution, respectively. Join us if you’ve played either or want to discover what they offer!
In Finspan (1-5 players), you’ll undergo the same basic concepts you’d find in either Wingspan or Wyrmspan: you collect fish on a tableau (in this case, your ocean) and try to chain their abilities to maximize your score at the end. The big difference between this game and its predecessors is that the core game loop has been stripped down, cleaned up, and simplified, making this title (arguably) the most accessible in the series (unless you do not like fish!). Plus you get to swim your hatchling fish around the map (you get more points if they school), so there’s a new spatial puzzle as well.
In Evolution: Oceans (2-6 players), the game changes from base Evolution to take into account the challenges (and opportunities!) of an aquatic biome. Food now migrates between different depths in the ocean (and between players!), and body size no longer means much when your weight is supported by water. In some ways, it’s a more complex version of the base game, but the changes make ecological sense when you think about them (unless we play with the Legends of the Deep expansion – which we have!).
So if you ever wanted to learn these games or just want to spend time with others who want to play, come on out! And if the rain has given you enough water already, stay tuned to the Events Calendar for future announcements of our next demoed game event!
