Join us at Pandemonium for our 3-hour, bi-weekly session to learn and play a selection of games from our demo library! You’re especially welcome if you’ve never before played hobby board games (and are curious about where to start).
Seeing as it’s close to the end of the year, tonight’s event will feature four games about adventuring, either with the intention of arriving at a destination before others or simply exploring to see what you might discover. Either way, you’re putting together a crew to help you – after all, it’s dangerous to go alone! The adventures you can try out span both time and space, as you’ll see below:
The Quest for El Dorado is a bit of a drafting game mixed with a race. In it, you’re putting together the best team you can (via deck-building) to help you navigate past and overcome obstacles between you and the legendary city of gold. What makes it interesting is that you are not the only adventuring team trying to get there,
Starship Captains is a game about playing a freshly minted starship captain looking for a crew to help bring their vessel through space (or – and also – scrape the rust off of the ship you’ve been “gifted.”) In some ways, it’s engine building (literally), and in other ways it’s taking the engine you’ve built and flying to different planets to complete missions before the other teams. If you like palpable progression, this could be a fun one.
Vaalbara is a bit more of a thinky game. For one, it’s less about exploration and more about claiming territory on a new bit of land. And for two, the way you claim that land (by playing a card that’s first in initiative order – compared to everyone else), is complicated by the fact you all have the same cards to start. If you like games where you have to think a few turns in advance (and see through the strategies of other players), you may like this one.
Finally, there’s Above and Below, a game that’s not only about building a settlement but having an adventure. Your community is on the surface (represented by your board), but in order to develop it, you have to send adventures below, into the caves, where you find out what happens in a big, spiral-bound book of tales. If you like story with a purpose – and if you like being surprised and celebrating the wins of others – this might be a game for you.
So if you ever wanted to learn these games or just want to spend time with others who like playing games, come on out! And if these aren’t your cup of tea, stay tuned to our events calendar for what we’ll be playing next year!
If you’d rather we meet at a different time OR if there are any board games in our collection you’d like to see us feature, let us know by filling out the Google Form here!
