Arcs: The Blighted Reach, a Campaign-Style Board Game!

If you like Arcs and want to experience the rise and fall of galactic factions in a dying, blight-infected galaxy, then join us on Saturday for an extended teach and play through of the Arcs: The Blighted Reach! Yes – all in one day!

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET READY?

Please try and play Arcs (the base game) once with the Leaders and Lore addition before playing. If you don’t have a group or the game, feel free to come out on a demoed or Open Table night, and we’ll be happy to teach you the game. This is because Arcs: The Blighted Reach adds a game on top of the base game, so familiarity will be important for a smooth experience for all.

WHAT IS THIS GAME?

A lot has been written about the base game, but remember that Arcs, fundamentally, requires a willingness to figure out how to optimize your turn from sub-optimal options. Adding to that, the game is aggressive, with rules that enable players to destroy, damage, or steal whatever you want from other players at the table (the flip-side being that you can too!). However, most of the game starts from a level playing field with everyone having the same objective. The means to achieve that objective may change round to round, but you generally know what you’re going to do for the whole game if you want to win.

The campaign changes that. Instead of victory points alone, you’ll be assigned an independent faction within a galactic empire that has its own idea of victory. In addition to playing the game as normal, you’ll be striving to complete this objective while balancing the neutral forces of the galactic empire, the hegemony of free states, a destructive blight infecting the galaxy, and even players who choose to rebel and leave the empire entirely. Everyone (including you) will have their own unique powers and objectives, and there’s even a galactic council where you can form political allies or argue about the differences.

But that’s just the first act. Over the course of the game, your destiny can develop or change, adding more and more unique powers and rules to the legacy of your faction and the legacy of the galaxy. In Arcs: The Blighted Reach, victory is still the paramount concern, but it will be elegantly seasoned by the emergent story at the table.
