Join us at Pandemonium for a regular, 3-hour session to learn and play a board game! You’re especially welcome if you’ve never before played hobby board games (and are curious about where to start). Last Light (2e) prides itself on being a simple -- and fast -- space civilization game, so if you're new to the genre or an old hand at this point, come out to see how it plays!
WHAT IS THIS GAME ABOUT?
“Last Light is a fast-paced 4x game with 3D planets and a rotating board in which players playing asymmetrical alien factions simultaneously gather light right before the heat death of the universe.
"Each turn, players select an action card, then all players take their actions simultaneously, exploring planets, mining for resources, gaining new technologies, and commanding fleets all while racing to the center of a rotating board to the last known white dwarf star to gather light for their civilization to survive.
"The first player to gather 20 light has what they need to overcome their rivals and lay claim to the last light in the universe and win!” –The Publisher
WILL THIS GAME BE FUN FOR ME?
The publisher’s description is a great summary of the game: it’s a race to 20 points. And how do you get those points? By occupying the center of the map. How do you occupy the center of the map? By building up your civilization to the point of expansion and making your fleets scary enemy ugh to hold it.
This is a game that’s meant to be played aggressively in a concentrated, king-of-the-hill interpretation of the classic space 4X games (like Twilight Imperium, Eclipse, or Arcs). And although the game advertises simultaneous turns, we will likely take it a little slower in our first few rounds so everyone can see what’s going on.
So if that sounds like something you’d want to try, do sign up for the event! We will cap the table at 6 players (even though we could go up to 8), but the game should play fine at numbers lower than that.
Finally, why did we choose to demo this one? This year, we demoed Arcs: The Blighted Reach, Twilight Imperium, and Eclipse, so we thought this would be a good tie-in to explore how games are developed in the hobby: where they take their inspirations, what they choose to refine and keep, and how it feels to hold other games in your head while you learn (and play!) more. Also, this game is the shortest of the aforementioned, so we thought it would be a nice conclusion to the informal series!
But as always, if extended spacefaring civilization games aren’t your cup of tea, please stay tuned to our Events Calendar for future events on Saturday and Sunday, our typical nights for games.
