I was a kid once. You might have been one too. I remember that we would make our own games, ranging from reskins of "truth or dare" to "this piece of paper told me I was going to marry Harrison Ford." Cootie Catchers and Would you Rathers aside, one I was fond of was simply the question of, "if you were trapped on a desert island, what would you bring?"
I overthought the heck out of this question. It would usually come with a category, like a historical figure or type of ice cream, as though you could enjoy whatever company or confection while also struggling for survival Hatchet-style on a strip of shore in the middle of the ocean. Survival is a grown-up concern however, and not wanting to defeat the joy of the question, I walked it back to the following:
"You're stranded on a desert island, but you're totally fine, and you can bring one book with you to pass the time with. What book would it be?"
Well, I asked some people, because that's how games go. Here are some of their answers in no particular order.
What book would you get marooned with? Did our interviewees choose wisely? We don't have a comments section, so don't leave your answers there. Instead, just write your responses on a sheet of paper, put it in a bottle, and chuck it into the sea. We'll get a hold of it sooner or later.*
