Company Town

In Company Town by Madeline Ashby, Hwa, our protagonist, is a bodyguard in a dying city on a rig. When a new family-run company comes and takes over, she becomes responsible for training and guarding the young heir. At the same time she takes on this new role, her friends and former clients begin dying grisly deaths.

There are many universal themes in this book, from urban decay to bio-engineering to classism to family tragedy, but the scifi thread keeps weaving throughout and comes to a surprising but appropriate
conclusion.

Hwa is a wonderful protagonist, and her world is rich and tangible. It's a near-future world that is all too believable.
