Woodsy Games for Autumn

Autumn in New England is one of the prettiest sights in the world, and the sight of beautiful trees and foliage have been inspirational in all kinds of art- including games! Even if you’re keeping inside to avoid bad weather, you can still vicariously enjoy the changing seasons. Would you like to be a little animal in the forest, or a child venturing through a chilling but beautiful Halloween landscape? Now you can!

For the beauty of nature in game form, you can’t do better than Arboretum. As the title implies, this card game is about making the prettiest, most varied and colorful garden path of trees, depicted with gorgeous and realistic artwork. Enjoyable for both children and adults, the game calls upon you to bluff each other as you manage your hand of cards, following simple and useful rules. There’s a reason Arboretum has consistently been one of the most popular games we carry!

For a more complex experience, Everdell sets up a world of cute woodland creatures who want to build cities and take care of their communities. With art that is more painterly than cartoonish, cards of mice and crows and all sorts of animals allow players to build and trade and manage their workforce to create the most splendid and functional cities, as well as lives for those within them. If you don’t have a group of people over at your house, you can even have an enjoyable solo game!

What about roleplaying games, though? Take a look at Babes in the Wood, a Powered by the Apocalypse game influenced by Over the Garden Wall and Adventure Time for a sweetly spooky experience. Venture forth into the forest to make friends, solve problems, and survive the forces of darkness in a world of magic, whimsy and death. It’s a child’s adventure seen through adult eyes, with the mix of silliness and seriousness that implies.

If you’d still like to play as talking animals, try out Root RPG! Although the Root board game kicked things off, the roleplaying game allows you to do more than just fight for dominance over the woodlands. War is still going on in the background, but your characters are just trying to live their lives, engaging in politics and heroics to get by. Find a way to advance the cause of your personal faction or broker peace between them- what will you do?

Have a fun time gaming, enjoy the colorful leaves, and stay out of the storms this autumn! We can help with at least one of those three things!
